In 2004 the Genesee County Bar Association and Legal Services of Eastern Michigan implemented a "Nursing Home and Hospice Outreach Program". The program assist low-income individuals residing in nursing homes or in hospice centers by drafting simple wills, durable power of attorney and/or codicils to wills. Low income is defined as income below 125% of the poverty level: those who could not otherwise afford to pay for these basic services. The program is open to applicants of any age residing in a Genesee County nursing home or hospice facility. Consideration may be given for applicants receiving in-home hospice care. Attorneys do not get paid for providing this free service, but do receive volunteer Pro Bono hours through the Access to Justice Program of the State Bar of Michigan and all participating attorneys have legal malpractice insurance.
